Cannon Hill
Cannon gets it name from an artillery battery that was originally
located from the mid nineteenth century.
The cannons were installed in response to a perceived Russian invasion
threat at the time.
The battery was relocated to
Flagstaff
Hill around 1910, with the enbattlements and the original
guns remaining there.
Cannon Hill is now home to WW1 trophy & WW2 disposal guns.
The park also has several monuments including;
Monument to
Major-General
Charles George Gordon
A
Portuguese Padrao commemorating early Portuguese exploration of the area
including busts of
Vasco
da Gama and Prince Henry (the Navigator), gifted by the
Portuguese Government
Several other smaller monuments
A WW1 memorial is located in the roundabout at the
entrance to the park.
The park has ample parking, BBQs, tables and a sheltered
area provided.
