The first meeting at this location: January 5, 1842.

This racecourse is the home of "Auckland's Biggest Party", aka Auckland Cup Week, with the Stella Artois Auckland Cup being New Zealand's most well-known horse race, a two-mile long race. Previous winners of the Auckland Cup include Cuddle, Kindergarten, Il Tempo and Castletown.

Another well known race held at this facility is the Group I race called the Telecom New Zealand Derby, a flat race for 3 year olds, named after the Earl of Derby. Previous winners include Kindergarten, Balmerino, Desert Gold, Mainbrace and Bonecrusher. The 2009 Telecom held a $2.2 million purse, making it New Zealand's richest race and the Southern Hemisphere's richest Derby.

The Waiwera Railway Stakes, another well-known race that is held here on New Year's Day, has been won by Mr Tiz, Tudor Light and Gold Hope. The Land Pride Easter Handicap, has been run sine 1874, originally over a 2 mile course and now reduced to 1 mile, has been won by racing greats Kindergarten, Sleepy Fox, Grey Way and Kiwi Can.

Group II races: Don Ha Real Estate City of Auckland Cup, Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic, New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes, Rich Hill Mile

Group III races: Darley Plate, Lindaur Special Reserve Stakes, Eagle Tech Stakes, Stella Artois Eclipse Stakes, Great Northern Challenge Stakes.

The Karaka Million 2YO is the country's richest race for juveniles and is one of just six one-million-plus-dollar races in New Zealand. A joint initiative between the Auckland Racing Club and New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB), the race is open only to graduates from the previous year's NZB Yearling Sales at Karaka.

Prestige Jumping Races (Hurdles/steeplechases) are also held at this facility.
