Copied from the sign on the church:
"Matakohe Pioneer Church Hall. This building was erected in 1866-67 by the early settlers 4 years after their arrival. It served as a church, school & public meeting place. As the Matakohe NonDenominational Church it was used mainly by Angelicans and Methodists. Moved to the present site in 1950 to make way for the cemetery renovations associated with the Coates Memorial Church and now used as Sunday School, Church Hall and meeting room. The flagpole marks the original site of this old church. "
Gordon Coates, the first New Zealand-born Prime Minister, attended this church and school in his youth.
