Located 6 km northeast of the Inter-American Highway, the tiny town of Juntas was once a major gold mining center during Costa Rica’s gold rush. Founded in the late 19th century in the canton of Abangares, Las Juntas de Abangares or Juntas as it is more commonly known, sits on the Rio Abangares along the foothills of the Cordillera de Tilaran mountain range close. Discovered in 1884, this mining town is just 30 km from the cloud forest of Monteverde, and makes for a great day trip if you happen to be in the area.

With the Inter-American Highway passing right through the canton, the turnoff of this town is situated some 24 km south of the town of Cañas. Attracting droves of treasure seekers and fortune hunters from all over the world, this town was sold to Minor C. Keith, the North American businessman who built the railroad track connecting Limon to the capital San Jose.

Centered around a Catholic church built in the heart of town, Juntas has very little in the way of tourist attractions. However, the one worthwhile visiting place here is the eco-museum or Ecomuseo de Las Minas de Abangares. This mining museum was created on the ruins of one of the most old gold mines in the region. Here, you can see lots of old machinery, tools and the infrastructure that were used to mine in the early part of the 20th century. Located 5 km from town, this museum makes for a wonderful picnic area with a children’s play ground and ample bird watching opportunities along its trails. One can even tour the abandoned gold mines in the area, but do make sure that you use a guide.

Another up and coming reason to visit this small sleepy town is because of the hot springs that are begin developed in the area. Today a luxury resort, the Hotel Pueblo Antiguo with Turkish baths, hot springs and much more has been opened here. It is the prefect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
