This lighthouse was constructed in 1871, to mark stone reefs off Colchester Point in Lake Champlain. It was staffed by 11 successive lightkeepers, and used until 1933.
The building's construction managed to blend a stout frame (for extreme weather) with a stylistic French Second Empire style exterior. This combination with an octagonal tower and mansard roof was the winning entry in a national design contest for this structure.
Once decommissioned, the entire structure was dismantled in 1952 and relocated to the grounds of the Shelburne Museum, where it has undergone a thorough restoration and preservation. It sits appropriately near an old friend - the steamboat Ticonderoga.
