Cleveland County is filled with history. Formed in 1890, one year after the land run, this county was the first of seven counties to be formed by the Oklahoma Organic Act. The legislation was enacted one year late, as this law would give authority to the governing of the territory through statehood.
The citizens of the county were able to pick for themselves a name. Having several good choices to choose from, the name Cleveland was choosen after the 22nd President of the United States, Grover Cleveland. When President Cleveland was re-elected the 24th President, and as the only President with a term in between his two terms, he never forgot this honor and rewarded the responsible local politicians.
The Moore-Lindsay House, the home to the Cleveland County Historical Museum, was completed in 1900 at a cost of $5,000. This was at a time when the average home in Norman cost $400. The beautiful house is extremely detailed in both the exterior and interior. Restoration of the structure has given this house longevity for the future, and will be around for generations of people to come and enjoy this museum.
