This building was originally constructed in 1886 for the L. Morris Dry Goods Company. It also housed Franklin & Baer’s wholesale liquor store. For many years the building’s corner was occupied by Jack Clower’s saloon, while the remainder of the building housed J. A. Behrens: Furniture and Undertaker. The funeral business moved west to 618 Main in 1919, but the furniture store was still here in the late 1920’s. In the 1950’s, a “modern” façade covered the first floor. The building was painstakingly restored, inside and out, in 1993. It stands as an example of what historic preservation can accomplish. *(Excerpt from Historic Signs of Rapid City by Norm Nelson)
The Clower Building, constructed in 1886, has provided an attractive backdrop for many photographers and town parades. Its architectural details, meticulously restored in 1993, make it one of South Dakota’s finest examples of the commercial Italianate construction common in the late 19th Century. From the corner of this building Big Jack Clower operated Jack’s Place, a notoriously rowdy and intemperate saloon.
