"Modelled on the Regent Theatre in New York, and with other ‘sister’ Regents around the country", the Regent Theatre was completed in 1928. Originally it was a cinema and performed in this function until the 1970s when Dunedin's main performing arts centre was condemned. At that time the Otago Theatre Trust was established to maintain and operate the facility.
