This railway museum has a good range of locomotives, coaches and artifacts spanning 170 years of railway history. It is operated by volunteers from the Great Western Society.

Inside the Carriage & Wagon Workshop/Display shed this train car, also known as a restaurant car, is housed on display to visitors. Built in 1935 for the Great Western Railway this is one of two new trains in this period specifically made for the Cornish Riviera Express. 1935 was the centenary year for Great Western. This dining car 9635 is the only one of the two surviving today.

The vehicle is unusual with its 9'7" width which maximises comfort but made recessing the doors necessary. The kitchen is almost as originally built in 1935 apart from the addition of an electric fan for the venturi extractor. This was originally fitted then converted from oil-gas to propane.

The dining saloon which adjoins the kitchen was refurbished in 1947 by Hamptons. The full width lowering windows were replaced by fixed lights and sliding ventilators of a shallow pattern in 1938.

The coaches were in service after the war on most of the mainline including the Newbury Race Specials.

In 1963 this carriage was bought for preservation and moved to the Dowtry Railway Preservation Society at Ashchurch in Gloucestershire. The same owner transferred the carriage to Toddington on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. The Great Western Society purchased the carriage in 1989 and brought it to Didcot.

The details of the carriage are:
Swindon Lot No 1540, Weight 42 tons, 8 cwt, Length 63'6.5", Width 9'7".

These details are available from reading the sign next to the carriage and the Didcot Railway Centre book.
