The task of the lock is to keep the water level in the port basin independent from the Weser. The water level of the Weser is affected by the tide. Some times a day the level of the Weser is above, some times it's below the level of the port basin.
The lock moves ships between the different elevations. Because of the changing magnitude of the elevation difference the time for one operation varies between 10 and 45 minutes.
The lock serves the flood prevention as well.

Die Schleuse dient dazu, den Wasserstand im Neuen Hafen unabhängig von der Tide der Weser zu regulieren. Zudem ist die Schleuse Bestandteil der Hochwasserschutzes.
