The Virginia Lake Aviary, built by Round Table, and the dovecote given to the city by the GS Babbage Estate, were officially opened in August 1979 by the then Mayor Ron Russell.

Over the years, the aviary has developed and now has 400 birds of 32 species, which is a greater number and wider variety than most walk-through aviaries have. The birds are from a variety of countries including Java, Australia, Afghanistan, India, Burma, China and Japan. We have pheasants, guineafowl, yellow and red crowned kakariki, as well as a lot of parrots from various countries.

Over time the Wanganui District Council has upgraded parts of the aviary and it now has the ability to house very small birds, as well as larger birds like the silver-crested cockatoos.
