Brookfield Zoo first opened in 1934 and became world renowned for its use of natural barriers, such as moats, rather than cages. the Perching Bird House is no exception with a free-flight area for select birds.
The one perching bird has been on exhibit since the zoo opened in 1934 - Cookie the Cockatoo. Since Cookie was an adult when he arrived in 1934, that would make Cookie nearly 75 years old! (Revised 01/19/2010: Cookie is now permanently off-exhibit. Enjoy your retirement, Cookie.)
The 75th Anniversary interpretive sign reads as follows:

In the mid-1950s, the addition of an innovative free-flight aviary allowed guest to immerse themselves ina rain-forest habitat
Micronesian kingfishers, an endangered bird, live behind the scenes here. In 2000, Brookfield Zoo hatched six successful chicks, which was a zoo record. To date, Perching Bird House has 22 of these chicks.
