There are over 10,000 sundials in France. In the hamlet of Les Vigneaux in Vallouise Hautes Alpes is a unique one, a sundial showing Republican hours. In this system, the day is divided into 10 hours, each with 100 minutes. This extreme example of the metric system was adopted during the French Revolution but was never accepted for common use.

In Vallouise, the first hamlet you come to is Vigneaux. Head for the centre of the hamlet to church with the tower with a pair of corner sundial. Under the church tower, look up to the left to see the Republican Sundial. This excellent dial was created by Atliere Tournasol (The Sunflower Workshop) for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution in 1789. The vertical dial declines north east so the gnomon points up and the dial shows only morning hours. There are two time scales, normal solar time and Republican Hours. The pictures were taken midmorning, about 10:45 European Daylight Savings Time and the dial indicates about 8:15 solar and 3.48 Republican.

Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
