All but one of the more than 400 students escaped the fire on February 22, 1957. Larry Adams, 9-year-old third grader, was the only one who didn't get out. His teacher, Mrs. Cora Beasley, was among five teachers critically burned. Adams was a polio victim and moved about very poorly. Mrs. Beasley died two days later. Approximately 25 students were critically burned.
The fire started at the rear of the auditorium.
