The Castle Hill in Buda is the ancient kernel of the Hungarian capital's right-bank settlement. Everything that surrounds it was once only suburbs. From whatever direction you reach the Castle District, you cross the ramparts which completely encircle Castle Hill. The whole area within the ramparts is protected as an ancient monument: the lines of the streets and the foundations and architectural remains of the buildings retain the atmosphere and memories of the medieval and 18th and 19th-century capital.

The Castle Hill and especially Buda Castle has existed in many reincarnations over the centuries. Today it houses museums and is a major Budapest attraction. Museums located within Castle Hill include the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Budapest History Museum.

The history Castle Hill is bounded with the history of Buda Castle and it begins in the Middle Ages. The old castle, left in ruins after Ottoman domination, was demolished to make room for a new Baroque-style palace. The 19th century saw the palace destroyed by siege, and once again had to be rebuilt. The palace that was constructed on the site of the old Buda Castle is the structure visitors see today.
