From the 140 foot high building visitors can experience the unique panorama of the landscape of this unspolit area. To the South the view streches right across the English Channel towards France. Looking inland the vast Dungeness Nature Reserve is clearly seen.
The Old Lighthouse is approximately 143 feet high and is one of the highest in the United Kingdom. The Top Lantern Room with its slate floor and steel roof houses the massive circular lens, weighing two tons, which used to float on a mercury base.
In 1901 Lighthouse number four was commissioned to be known to this day as the Old Lighthouse. Half a mile away stands its modern successor the black and white lighthouse number five which opened in 1961.
