The roundhouse and turntable have been removed. The turntable will be relocate to the new Oregon Rail Heritage Museum near OMSI. Some features of the roundhouse will be incorporated in a future expansion of the museum.

This area got its start as Brookland in the 1850"s. The Oregon Central Railroad arrived in the 1860's. The name changed and Brookland became a popular area to live and work known as the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The 1ST Brooklyn Roundhouse was built in 1912. It was at the Southern Pacific Railroads northern most terminus. The end of the line.
The existing roundhouse was built during World War II. The original brick roundhouse was torn down in 1956. Portland’s other roundhouse was removed for a development in the 1990’s leaving this as a lone remnant of the steam era.
The Brooklyn Roundhouse is home to Portland's three steam locomotives in the former Southern Pacific Brooklyn Yard in Portland, Oregon.
The most famous of the three is the SP 4449 The other two are the
SP&S 700
, and the OR&N 197 .
The roundhouse is also home to several vintage diesel locomotives.
This roundhouse is not on public property. There is an active train yard surrounding this facility and The Union Pacific Railroad takes trespass laws seriously.
The roundhouse can be viewed from a distance on an overpass sidewalk located at the given coordinates on Holgate Boulevard.

The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation
hopes to one day have a facility that is open to the public. That plan includes moving the current roundhouse to another location to preserve and share its history. This goal was detailed in the spring 2005 ORHF newsletter ORHF Newsletter (Adobe Acrobat).
