A Flagstaff is reported to have located on this hill since at least 1853, shortly after the settlement of Warrnambool.
The the adjacent lighthouse(still operating)was relocated here here in 1871 from it's original location on an island near the mouth of Merri River.
The flagstaff and light station are now enclosed within the grounds of the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum.
The photograph was taken from the given coordinates, which is the best viewing vantage point without actually being inside the museum grounds.
