The Terme di Nerone is the only reamaining architectonic monument of the Roman Empire era in Pisa. The complex of ruins located close to the Lucca Gate was referred from Medieval times improperly as the ruins of Nero's Palace - but in the reality this archaeological site shows remains of Roman baths, thermae...
The complex of Roman baths (thermes) was built in the last decades of the 1st century, in time of emperor Domitianus. Bathes were reconstructed in 2nd. The best preserved part of the ruins is so called laconicum (the dry sweating room of the Roman thermae, contiguous to the caldarium or hot room), an octagonal building with apse, covered by a perforated dome. The rest of the site is preserved only as the remaons of walls.
