Masterful stonework of local granite in Romanesque style created a somber effect when this former jail was constructed. The corner tower (which lost its battlements in the earthquakes of 1935), thick stone lintels and heavy arches recall the romantic nineteenth century notion that a structure's appearance should match its function.
This building was constructed under contract with the Detroit Lock and Safe Company, which should indicate the type of security it emplaced.
Currently, the building is used as the Myrna Loy Center for Performing Arts.
