Walter P. Chrysler was born in 1875 in Wamego, Kansas, when he was 3 the family moved to Ellis, Kansas where his father worked for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. This home is the third home for Walter lived in. He attended schools in Ellis and when he was 17 began work at the then Union Pacific Railroad as a machinist's apprentice. When he completed his apprenticeship he moved to Salt Lake City. It is said he never forgot his upbringing in Ellis and gave back to the community later in his life. The house is operated as a museum. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
