Frye's Measure Mill Blacksmith Shop - Wilton, New Hampshire - Blacksmith Shops on Waymarking.com

Built by David Kenney in 1750, this old blacksmith shop, now an antique store, is on the grounds of the old Frye's Measure Mill which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The mill conducts tours, and still sells shaker baskets and furniture in the gift shop. There is also a display of vintage fire fighting equipment.

In 1858, Daniel Cragin attained his majority (a colloquialism meaning he became twenty-one years of age) and rented a room in the Putnam Bobbin Factory. He began his enterprising by manufacturing knife trays and toys on a cash capital of ten dollars. Within two years, Cragin's company was profitable, and he purchased a small building on the site. In the autumn of 1878, Cragin began to manufacture dry measures which soon became the mainstay of his business.

Now an historic landmark recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Frye's Measure Mill has been water powered since the 1850's. Some of the Mill's first products - including round and oval pantry boxes, measures, and piggins - are still being produced on much of the original water powered machinery. Examples of Frye's oldest woodenware can be found in museums throughout the country.
