Nichol’s Blacksmith Shop was founded in the 1890s, catering to the needs of horses and horse-drawn vehicles as well as making tools and equipment for farmers. Today it is very much in its original condition.

Nicol’s Blacksmith Shop, in the historic settlement of Duntroon, was given Category I status on the National Register by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board recently, thanks to the heritage vision of four local farmers.
This local landmark in North Otago was saved from demolition in the mid-1970s when local farmers John Hore, Burns Pollock, Bill Simpson and the late Jim Harvey purchased the smithy and its chattels. As children the four men had spent time with then-owner Nicol Muirden at the smithy, pumping the bellows for him. Muirden had taken over the business in 1930.
Today it is very much in its original condition – timber framed and clad and unlined. It has five separate functional areas: the shop, office, blacksmith’s shop, coach and wheelwright area and the motor garage. The interior of the working areas are full of the original equipment, including the forge, bellows, wheel pit and jig.
Footnote: The old photo we took on a much earlier visit to the South Island shows the Forge before it was 'saved and restored' and clearly shows the old original sign with the name Nichol's spelt with an H so we have used this spelling in the waymark title.
