Te Henui opened in 1861 and is the original New Plymouth public cemetery. Set in an attractive park environment, it serves mainly as a heritage cemetery rich in local history and monuments.
The early settlers of New Plymouth are buried in this cemetery. The founder of New Plymouth, Frederic Carrington, lies here in a humble grave.
Our family ancestors came out on the ship Timandra which sailed from Plymouth England on 2 November 1841 and arrived in New Plymouth, New Zealand on 23 February 1842. Some of these early settlers were stonemasons and their graves are in this cemetery, the elaborate headstones are a fine example of their handwork.
A walk around the cemetery will reveal many beautiful historic graves, many are hidden and almost unnoticeable among the trees, some have fallen into disrepair and many are unreadible. Under the blossoms of magnificent cherry and magnolia trees, this is the resting place of much of New Plymouth's early history.
