This stadium has hosted college football games since 1958. Former home of the Fiesta Bowl for 34 years it held two National Championship games, one in 1998 and the other in 2002. It has been the location of the Insight Bowl since 2006.

Sun Devil stadium was the home field for the Arizona Cardinals pro-Football team from 1988 to 2005 and held the Superbowl XXX in 1996. It also was the home field of both the the Arizona Wranglers and the Arizona Outlaws, two USFL professional teams.

Number 42 is significant to Sun Devil Stadium as it is the retired jersey number of Pat Tillman. Tillman was a star of the defense of the Arizona State Sun Devils and a fan favorite during his tenure at ASU. Drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998 he was named to the 2000 NFL All Pro team.

Eight months after the 2001 attack Tillman turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years from the Cardinals to enlist in the U.S. Army and was subsequently redeployed to Afghanistan. On April 22, 2004, he was killed in a friendly fire incident while on patrol.

Sun Devil Stadium's original construction cost of $1 million brought 30,000 seats for fans to cheer on their team. Several additions and upgrades have brought the available seat count to up to 76,000 with expansion bleachers.

Sun Devil stadium has also been the locations of many concerts such as U2. In 1987 Pope John Paul II held mass for 75,000 people and in 2009 President Barack Obama delivered the graduation commencement for Arizona State University in front of a crowd of 63,000.

In 1996 the football field was named in honor of ASU football coaching great Frank Kush. Kush's coaching brought home 9 WAC conference titles as well as 4 Fiesta Bowl and one Peach Bowl victory. Kush was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
