The capital and touristic centre of Santorini Island, Thira (also called Fira), is located high on the edge of the huge ancient volcano caldera rim. Over 850 m long stairs lead up the crater wall, 587 steps, from the old port of Skala Thira to the town. You can walk (slihtly exhausting...) or you can go by donkey (not so cheap...), but there is also a fast cable car...
