The last walking beam side-wheel passenger steamer in existence was hauled two miles inland and given a berth at the Shelburne Museum.

The 220-foot Ticonderoga was built in Shelburne, Vermont in 1906. It was operated on Lake Champlain until 1953, and barely missed being scrapped upon retirement. Vermont author Ralph Nading Hill led a citizen's committee determined to find a way to preserve the ship - which subsequently became a plan to build a railroad, float her onto the rails, and haul her 2 miles overland in winter, when the frozen ground would support the weight.

This effort was successful, and today the ship is preserved at the 75-acre Shelburne Museum.
