?In the commercial district portion of Portland, Maine, where merchant ships used to dock and off-load their wares, is an unusual pizza restaurant, the Flatbread Company. It is located on Commercial Street on a pier behind an Irish pub restaurant, near the ferry terminal.
As you walk inside and get to the host/hostess station, you note that the decor is rather casual and rustic. The tables and chairs are basic, and many of the other furnishings have a rough finish. Hanging on string are cloth squares that are Buddhist prayer flags. There is an indoor eating area, where you have a great view of the workers making your pizza in the wood-fired oven, and an outdoor eating area, where you have a view of the Portland harbor.
The menu offers both 'veggie' and 'carne' pizzas, all having ingredients that are natural/organic. And, they offer an organic salad if pizza is not what you want.
The Flatbread Company started in 1998, when George Shrenk and Jay Gould got together in Waitsfield, Vermont and had a business making flatbread pizzas to supermarkets. They would open their operations to the public on weekends for people to enjoy right out of their ovens. Three years later, they and John Meehan opened the first Flatbread Company restaurant in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Today, there are seven restaurant locations in most New England states plus one in Hawaii.
Parking is not available right at the restaurant, but there is generally enough street parking in the area (you might have to walk a couple blocks).
As a final recommendation, it is some of the best pizza that I have had!
