On top of the Portland Observatory, which is on top of Munjoy Hill, stands the Portland Observatory, and octagonal structure, now a museum, that once was a signal tower for the merchants in the port. On top of this tower are three flag poles: one for the U.S.A. flag, one for the State of Maine, and the last for the City of Portland.

The flag is visible from the ground and can be photographed from this location without obstructions. A closer picture can be obtained by taking a tour of the observatory, which will require a fee. Allow 45 minutes for the tour.
