Welcome to our university college
Katholieke Hogeschool Brugge–Oostende (Catholic University College of Bruges–Ostend) provides a whole range of professionally and academically oriented study programmes at the level of Bachelor and Master.

KHBO, together with 11 other Flemish University Colleges, is part of the Associatie K.U.Leuven (Association Catholic University Leuven). Together they make up the largest association of its kind in Flanders. This cooperation with the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, one of the oldest universities in Europe, offers the possibility of optimising our courses and guarantees the academic level of our courses.

The courses we offer are aimed at young people interested in a higher basic education, at professionals looking for extra training and specialisation, or at those wanting to re-orientate themselves completely. Because of our close cooperation with businesses and institutions, our courses are periodically tailored to suit the needs of the everyday world.

Hence, our courses have not only been developed professionally but also cross-culturally. Because of the increasing internationalisation of the corporate world, we give to each of our courses an explicit international touch. We do this, for example, through content-oriented cooperation with foreign institutions and through exchange programs for students and lecturers.

Not only do we want to be of use to the students by preparing them in the best possible way for their future career, but also to the socio-economical needs of the wider area in which we operate. Indeed, we market ourselves as a ‘value-building’ university college, that welcomes one and all.

By the start of the academic year 2008-2009, the campuses in Bruges will be relocated to a brand new campus, along with the ‘Central Management and Administration’.
This new campus will be the educational top of the bill in accommodation, which will introduce and sustain educational novelties. There will be laptop access throughout the building. Also all student support facilities will be in one building.

Studying in a historic city like Bruges or a seaside resort like Ostend – it’s not given to everybody. Both are lively towns to live in, culture, sport, pubs and other recreational facilities in abundance, however each with its own individual character and charm.
So choosing the KHBO as a place of study also means opting for the social life outside the campus!

In Bruges, you’ll find yourself in a historic city which feels very strongly about culture. Bruges could already boast a colourful cultural tradition but – if that was not enough – it was also voted the ‘Cultural Capital of Europe’ in 2002. And that, gave Bruges a new cultural élan and a brand-new concert hall, which is widely regarded as one of the best in Europe. Not to mention the many other arts centres and auditoria, the bustling night life and the variety of sports to try. If you want to find out more about Bruges, please check out the following website www.brugge.be,

The Ostend campus is, for its part, truly unique in the higher education scene, and not just on account of its prime location. Think about if for a moment: where else can you, in your spare time, go windsurfing or walking on the beach, sailing, kite-flying or simply sunbathe on the beach? And what’s more – on the campus itself – rent a room with a sea view? The proximity of the sea creates, obviously, an unparalleled atmosphere. It’s not for nothing that Ostend is called the ‘Queen of Seaside Resorts’!

The KHBO has opted for an explicit international emphasis in each of its training courses. Mainly content-oriented cooperation with foreign institutions, but also the classic exchange programmes for students and teachers are, in that regard, the linchpin of our business. This means that students, depending on the chosen course, can opt to do a work placement abroad, lasting several months or perhaps even continue their studies there. In that context, we work towards the best possible transparency of our curricula and avail ourselves, to that end, of the European ECTS system.

Indeed, the KHBO has a long tradition of collaborating with other teaching institutes. Those forms of cooperation will, in the longer term, be intensified, within the association but externally too.
The KHBO also devises and develops projects in the South. This is the case in Congo, Chile, Nicaragua and South Africa, among others.

Many people, both in the North and the South, are actively involved in funding that cooperation and in providing other resources. The ‘solidarity work group', of both internal and external services, assists with the policymaking, research and action plans. The students too can get involved, if they so wish.
