Operated by NATS (National Air Traffic Services) the station is a key part of the Air Traffic Control system for the North Atlantic area.
It can be climbed by the private road to the radar station (the highest surfaced road in Britain) though most people climb using a more picturesque route. The views are mainly of wild moorland and other Pennine tops.
