The Town Hall & Theatre, now known as the Civic Theatre, has graced Tay Street since 1906. While there is no group based here today, many concerts of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and other groups perform here when visiting Invercargill.

The Civic Theatre is an important asset in Invercargill. It is frequently used by local groups, national groups on tour, and international performers when coming to Southland.
Today the Civic is on the Register of Historic Places and has recently gone through an extensive upgrade by the Invercargill City Council.
