On the 10th of April, 1968 the 'Wahine' was carried onto Barret Reef and sank in one of the worst storms ever seen on the Wellington coast.
51 people died in the disaster, most of them middle-aged or elderly. Some were drowned or died of exposure. Others were thrown against the rocks by the surf on the eastern shore and died then. Many washed up on the Eastbourne shores.
This memorial remembers those 51 lives lost at sea.
