On the Theaterplatz in Weimar stands in front of the German National Theater the Goethe and Schiller Memorial as a double statue.

The memorial represents the poets are standing side by side. The front of the base in polished granite bears the inscription:

„Dem Dichterpaar / Goethe und Schiller / das Vaterland.“

The sculptor Ernst Rietschel created the design. 1857 completed the founder Ferdinand von Miller at the Königlichen Erzgießerei at Munich the bronze.

The unveiling of the monument took place on 4 September 1857 in celebration of the 100th Birthday of Duke Carl August. It a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Klassisches Weimar". Copies of the monument are in San Francisco, Milwaukee and Cleveland.
