Nestled amongst the upper reaches of the historic Kaipara Harbour, Matakohe offers "Real New Zealand Heritage" at its best.

The focal point is the world famous Kauri Museum depicting the mighty kauri tree and faithfully charting the history of the people, area and community. Magnificent displays, steam sawmills and large mill machinery, kauri gum exhibits, a quality 1900's kauri house, beautiful kauri and other native timber panels, extensive photographs, historic buildings and superb collections of memorabilla make The Kauri Museum a "must see".
The Kauri Museum gives a fascinating insight into what life was like for our early pioneering settlers and shows through the galleries the demise of the mighty Kauri Tree, through the development of pioneering life.

The Maoris were the first gatherers, then would-be farmers who used the gum as a cash crop to improve their farms. At the peak of the industry there were 20,000 gumdiggers in the north - Maori, Chinese, Malaysian and Yugoslav. However, the ethnic group with the greatest presence were the Yugoslavs.
Some of the diggers bought land and became farmers or, around Auckland, planted grapes for wine. For export the gum was sorted into grades and sold by the gum merchants. All that remain today are the many signs on the Kauri Coast landscape, photos of our industrious, digging forebearers and amazing gum artifacts in museums like this fine example in Matakohe.
