There are many stories about the goings-on at Napier Prison. From floating heads to doors unlocking themselves and unexplained footsteps, its any investigator’s dream!

A team of paranormal specialists have been checking out the strange occurances. Phoen-X: Paranormal got its start at the Napier Prison Backpackers, a 150 year old Hawke’s Bay icon. Built in 1874, it housed men, woman and children at one time or another, and some of them are still there!

Napier Historic Prison is situated in sunny Hawkes Bay, on Napier's Bluff Hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Centennial Gardens. Built on the location of the old quarry, inmates used to break out stone to build the walls that would keep them imprisoned. They also built the gardens opposite.

There are day and night tours available, the tour guide entertains you with all sorts of tales about life in the prison which opened late 1800s and was working up till 1993, then and now. It is apparently haunted, with plenty of people having tales to tell. Part of the prison has been converted to a Backpackers, with very basic rooms like cells, for those that want to experience a night in the prison.
