Napier Historic Prison is situated in sunny Hawkes Bay, on Napier's Bluff Hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Centennial Gardens. Built on the location of the old quarry, inmates used to break out stone to build the walls that would keep them imprisoned.
Built in 1874, it housed men, woman and children at one time or another, and some of them are still there!
Daily guided tours and special night tours:
Your personal guide will enthrall you with tales of the villains, victims and heroes that have served time in the oldest prison in NZ. Be entertained with stories of infamous deeds, notorious gang members, violent kingpins, prison escapes, ghosts and inside scams.
Scary Night Tours:
Every week, the prison is descended upon by a talented group of actors for what is called “The Dead Hill Haunting”. Each Friday and Saturday night, they get covered in Hollywood-style make up, put on some scary clothing, and proceed to scare paying customers.
But, according to Paranormal Specialists, some of the "local inhabitants" have decided to join in too!
Why not find out for yourself. Special night tours are available at a time to suit your group. Minimum 20 people. Hear stories about hangings and escapes and see ghosts, ghouls, lunatics, prisoners, murderers and the criminally insane. ITS GONNA BE A SCREAM!
Guided Historic Tours:
Listen to tales of a prison wall constructed with hard labour, as well as hangings, escapes, and ghost sightings. Feel the chill on the back of your neck as you walk from death row past the graves of the executed and into the hanging yard. Take your mug-shot and get locked up in solitary confinement!!
