Public/pay phone are still widely used in the 3rd world (even the 2.5 world of Thailand). In the smallish sized town of Surin public phones are still easily found, and at the train and bus station there are lots.
When I visited the train station to take this picture, a train had just arrived and the phones were in rapid use. I had to wait for a minute or so until one was available. They are used to accept incoming calls, the phone number can be seen written at the top of the phone.
There are also more phones and a line of phone booths just outside the train station.
