The Alexandra Redoubt was one of a chain of forts built between Auckland and the Waikato river in the early 1860s. This sign explains a brief history of Alexandra Redoubt.
One of the best preserved earthworks of the New Zealand Wars, Alexandra Redoubt was one of a chain of fortifications built between Auckland and the Waikato. This redoubt was built by the Armed Constabulary when Pirongia was garrisoned during the Te Kooti campaigns.
The high earth walls and trenches – there is still a full two metres from the ditch floor to the top of the bank (escarpment) – protected a blockhouse and flagstaff.
Alexandra Redoubt was never attacked, but the Armed Constabulary continued to guard it till 1886 when it was abandoned.
