Locals have given this corner two colloquial names — The Monument and Bank Corner. The former refers to the Boer War Memorial in the middle of the roundabout. The latter is a reference to the three impressive bank buildings that are on the SW, SE, and NE corners. Today none of these buildings function as banks.
The names — Tay, Dee, and Clyde — are references to Scottish and north English rivers. Many of the streets in central Invercargill draw their names from waterways in this part of Great Britain.
The waymark is for the northeast corner of the intersection. It is strongly recommended not to waymark the Boer War Memorial as entering into this busy roundabout on foot is very hazardous.
