Two tall Maori carved totem poles stand beside the beach at Waiotahi. They greet the pathway of the rising sun on the world's new day. There is a plaque describing the carvings by Heke Collier on these pouwhenua or pou (carved pillars). The poles were unveiled by the Governor of New Zealand on 4th May 1991.
At the bottom of the brass plaque description, almost unnoticeable in small letters, it states that a time capsule prepared in 1991 has been buried beneath this plaque.
