The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain.
The trail head begins at the end of Mangatepopo Road. There are information signs, parking areas and toilets at the trailhead. The Crossing spans the length of Mt Tongariro (18.5 Kilometres) and takes about 7-9 hours. You start from the Mangatepopo Valley and walk over towards the Ketetahi road end as this will minimize the climbing involved. You will need to arrange transport to the beginning of the trek and pick-up from the Ketetahi end. There are buses available.

Trail allowances or restrictions: *No dogs are allowed in the Tongariro National Park.
*You must check current track conditions before starting out.
*This rugged alpine trek is exposed and climbs to 1900m so trampers should have experience trekking in alpine conditions.
*This trip should not be undertaken in winter without mountaineering experience and equipment.
*Water from the upper Mangatepopo stream, Emerald Lakes and Ketetahi Springs is not suitable for drinking due to high mineral content.
*There is no drinkable water available between the head of the Mangatepopo Valley and Ketetahi Hut.
Trail type: Rock and volcanic scoria on the mountain, and bush track at the end. Wear sturdy boots.
