The Valleyview Knights of Columbus began on September 8, 1983 with an organizational meeting following first degree initiations in Valleyview. Father Louis Collin Omi was the Kingpin in getting the K of C organized and served as the first chaplain. Roland Cailliau was council 8427’s first grand knight. Valleyview Council 8427 charter members are as follows: Stan Breland, Larry Bonertz, Patrick Bonertz, Roland Cailliau, Michael Chute, Rev. Louis Collin Omi, Harry Denny, Matthew ‘Mickey’ Dierkhising, Clarence Doucette, Gerard Doucette, Ed Faltermeler, Richard Fudge, Andrew Gall, Adrien Gamache, Raymond Garon, Patrick Glashan, Jose Guevara, Herbert Hill, Eugene Kramps, Steve Kushneryk, Henri Lambert, Real Paradis, Francois Prevost, Andre Polard, John Pozniak, Leo Richard, Donald Rouse, John Ryan, Blake Wallace, Raymond Walz and Tony Yelenik. The K of C became very active in the parish and the community.

They took over the weekly bingos as their prime fundraiser and helped clear up the church debt including the mortgage. The fraternal organization joined their fellow knights in the battle against abortion, supporting battered women and helping in province-wide fundraising programs. They provided financial assistance to the Catholic school in their many programs and extracurricular activities. The K of C also assisted the church and sisters in Calais (Sturgeon Lake), constructed an outdoor skating rink and helped out in improving and maintaining the parish church and yard.

Council 8427 was also very active and involved during the Pope’s visit to Edmonton. The council also hosted many social functions in the parish and school community.

Interest started declining when the bingo fundraising program was dropped plus several key members moved from the community. Membership was declining and potential new members are not being recruited. Also a factor was that several members ere aging and were not as active as in earlier? or the organization.
