The Masonic Cemetery is located at 900 Charles St. in historic Fredericksburg. Veterans of three wars are buried here -- American Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War, as well as businessmen and citizens.
Among them stands a broken column. The inscription is worn and very hard to read. As best as could be ascertained, it says:
WILLIAM LEWIS MAURY
Son of
Lieut. John M. Maury, U.S. Navy
and Eliza, his Wife
Born May 4, 1818(?)
Died November ?, 1820
(Note: Italicized entries indicate worn and unclear inscription.)
Upon further investigation, according to
Wikipedia, Lieut. John Minor Maury married Eliza Herndon. They had two sons, William and Dabney. Dabney Herndon Maury would go on to become a major general in the Civil War, and U.S. Minister to Colombia, S.A. William died young. Therefore, it is relatively safe to assume that this grave with the broken column is indeed for William, the son whose life was cut very short.
