Talamone is located in southern Tuscany, on a rocky promontory overlooking the Costa d'Argento. Usually deserted during the cold winter months, it is a tourist destination in the warmer months, buttressed by the newly-created Parco della Maremma, a nature park.
While the fishing industry has disappeared due to declining fish population, the rocky coastline has provided a tourist industry for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, and providing some badly needed jobs and employment opportunities to the local population.
This statue, "In Attesa del Marinaio", [trans: "Waiting for the Sailor"], was made in 1983 by Tilde Maria Valentini, and given as a gift from the inheriting family members to the township in 1997.
