The castle was built in the early 13th century by the family de'Ghiriglioni. It originally was moated and had four towers. It was abandoned in the 17th century and substantial parts of the castle were destroyed. Only the residential quarter and one tower were still in use and remained.
In the early 20th century the building hosted an art school and a theatre. Later a guesthouse was added and grew in importance over the years. After massive renovation works in the late 80ies it became the four star hotel of today.
