This was a surprise find. Adjacent to the statue commemorating the founder of the town of Surin (WM72C4) is a display of elephant statues. It is an attractive design, showing the elephants in rapid motion, controlled by their mahouts.
Surin is the 'elephant town' of Thailand. The annual three day elephant festival has, amongst its many activities, an elephant buffet, where dozens of lucky elephants eat as much as they can from a selection of fine foods. According to the accompanying sign, in 2003 these elephants enjoyed the largest buffet ever!
It is a pleasant spot, near a water feature, a Wat, and a memorial to the founder of the town. Several times a year sizeable local events are celebrated in this spot.
