The trail head to the Mt. Roothaan summit is accessed via a 10-mile long dirt road that leaves from Priest Lake's East Shore Rd immediately north of Hunt Creek at approximately N48°34.007 W122°49.712. Be advised that Garmin maps of the mountain roads in this area are extremely inaccurate and you will need to use roads that are not shown on those maps.
Moun10Bike has generously created accurate maps of these roads that you can download and I strongly recommend you take advantage of them or risk getting lost before you can find the trail head. You can find them
here. The last mile of the road is extremely rough and deteriorates all the way to the parking area and trail head at N 48° 36.474 W 116° 44.144. A high clearance vehicle is needed to make it all the way up.
The hike is about 1.5 miles and approximately 1500 feet of elevation gain. Most of that elevation gain is in the last half mile and the last quarter mile will be climbing up a steep talus boulder field. The summit is marked by a cairn of rocks and the summit register is tucked into the base of the cairn. It is a Nalgene bottle stuffed with an assortment of papers signed by hikers over the years.
