The Plaque says elephant but we know she is Old Bet. This is the book end to the Old Bet story from Waymark WM5NQ7 “Tribute to Old Bet” by Old Bet in Somers, NY. This is the exact quote from their Waymark, I am not plagiarizing, it just says it all so well.
"Sometime in the early 1800s -- the exact year is unknown, but it was before 1809 -- a man named Hachaliah Bailey of Somers, N. Y. acquired an elephant called Betty. He renamed her Old Bet. Old Bet became the star of Bailey's touring menagerie. In 1816, while Old Bet was on exhibit in Maine, she was shot dead by a local farmer. According to one story, the farmer thought it was wrong for poor people to be spending their money to view a travelling elephant. Another version of Old Bet's obituary states that the farmer shot her because she was being exhibited on a Sunday, in violation of local "Blue Laws.""
