This tunnel was on the Catlins River Branch of the NZ Railway network. The route operated from 1879 until 1971 serving one of the southernmost parts of the South Island.

Today the tunnel has been restored by the Department of Conservation as a short recreational walk just off the Southern Scenic Route (visit link)
